HIP Communications Assistant

If you have ever received a long and complicated letter from the government telling you that you owe taxes or sharing other complicated (but important) information, you are certainly not the only one!

The complex language and difficult vocabulary often used in formal letters may be easy for some to understand, but certainly not all citizens. People in debt and in poverty receive more letters than average, and therefore face this problem much more often. Because they do not (fully) understand the message of the letter, more problems often arise. The ELSA Lab Debt and Poverty (part of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK)) is committed to applying AI to social problems and asked us to work on this problem. Thus, we developed an application that helps to simplify the difficult language that is often used.

Meet HIP

This application is called the HIP Communication Assistant.HIP stands for “Clear,” “Intelligent,” and “Productive,” demonstrating the purpose of using the application. It is not meant to replace communication assistants, quite the contrary! It is meant to support them in communicating with citizens, because without this support, communication is not clear enough.

Why should you use HIP?

The HIP Communication Assistant demonstrates the many opportunities to address today’s challenges using artificial intelligence (AI). Using the HIP Communication Assistant simplifies information for citizens, allowing them to make informed decisions and better understand government organizations.

We see that using HIP makes a clear difference in the ease of reading, and fully explains the concepts so that normal citizens understand. We have demonstrated this with scientific research.

HIP is perfectly aligned with our mission to reduce knowledge waste, make communication more efficient and clear, and optimize any form of knowledge exchange. It is not only useful within the context of government letters, but can be used for many more things!
